Eurocamp Review: Domaine des ormes, brittany

In July 2024 we took our two kids then aged 3 + 7 to Eurocamp Domaine des Ormes in Brittany. After a great experience at Eurocamp La Croix du Vieux Pont, Paris earlier in the year we were very excited about our week away. With a few day trips planned and some fun activities in the parc, it was going to be a holiday to remember.

Getting to brittany from essex

We love a road trip, so we decided to drive to Brittany from our home in Essex to be able to see some famous sights whilst in this part of France.

A little bit of back story, Carl and I both lived in France for 8 + years previously, our daughter Summer was even born in Nice. We love being back in our second home and it really did feel like home as soon as we crossed the channel.

We took an early ferry from Dover to Calais, a move we would end up regretting. We had previously taken the Eurotunnel to Calais which is only 35 minutes and a lot less hassle, its also a lot more expensive. We had actually saved up our Tesco Clubcard point which contributed a large chunk towards the cost of the train. We will definitely do this again next time. We found the experience of the ferry to be more stressful than we had liked. The race for a seat, the expensive and very average food options, the additional travel time were all factors of us preferring the train over the ferry - but of course cost plays a part in this.

Another ‘mistake’ we made was taking the P&O Ferry to Calais instead of the Brittany Ferry from Portsmouth. It hadn’t occurred to us to take the Brittany Ferry as it was a longer journey at sea, of course, in hindsight this is better option with kids as it means less time in a car. It also takes you straight to Saint - Malo port which is only 30 minutes drive to Domaine des Ormes! in conclusion, we will be taking a Brittany Ferry next time!

The drive from Calais was 4.5 hours and we had factored in a few stops along the way. One of which was the lovely seaside town of Le Havre. We stopped here for a few hours having lunch, playing on the beach and walking along the promenade. If you are looking for a pit stop or overnight stay, I would highly recommend Le Havre.

Our accomodation in Eurocamp

We had the Premiere Comfort XL holiday home in the ‘Les Pommiers’ region of the parc. I highly recommend requesting a holiday home here if you decide on a comfort xl as its a great spot for peace and quiet. The road is a dead end so we had no through traffic making it ideal for the kids to play on their scooters. Its also around 10 minutes walk to the center which is busy and can be noisy, id recommend staying away from this part if you are travelling with babies or small children.

The holiday home itself is great with its own grass covered garden with sun loungers, decking area for dining, 3 bedrooms, toaster and dishwasher. You also have your own parking area in front of your holiday home.

The Premiere comfort is ideal for those on a budget. There are certainly nicer and newer holiday homes but these can be pricey, we also noticed they are closer to the main entertainment area of which you would have to factor in noise.

Note - the premiere comfort xl’s do not have a tv which was great but sometimes we needed one. We pre loaded our kids tablets with films so they could watch them throughout the holiday when they (and us!) needed some downtime. They have free WIFI at the parc but the reception was pretty bad in our holiday home - this could be because we were so far from the main hub.

The Parc and activities

The ‘Dome’ indoor swimming pool, outdoor swimming pool, climbing frame and zip wires

After an early night we woke up refreshed and ready to explore the parc. After a quick shopping trip to Carrefour for food and supplies (rose) we headed to the main hub of the parc to see what was on offer.

The Pools

The main attraction is The Dome, I would call it an indoor swimming pool but that would be an injustice. It has a lazy river, a lazy river for young children, multiple slides, outdoor pool with sun loungers, toddler splash area, wave machine and kids entertainment. Its great to have this as an option if you are travelling off season or on a rainy day.

There is also an outdoor pool with slides and a baby pool. There are also sun loungers here but as you can imagine, they are taken quick.

Pool number 3 is the original pool for the Domaine. A traditional rectangular pool with no slides or baby area. We didn’t use this pool but it looked lovely for people wanting to relax in quiet!

Pony Rides

Our kids really wanted to try pony riding so we took them on the second to last day. We were kitted up by at the stables and sent on our way for a 30 minute ride. This is a self guided ride so you will be holding on to the pony and walking around the golf course. After a slightly nervous start (from us parents not the kids) we set off and it was lovely. The kids enjoyed it, i just wish it was a little longer! Ill definitely book two sessions next time. At only 12 Euros a child we thought this was great value and a highlight of our week.
