We are heading to the Netherlands with Amanda a travel blogger at @RestlessPursuits to discover the most charming places to visit with kids in the Netherlands. Kinderdijk
Did you know the Netherlands is home to some of the most charming towns in Europe, perfect for family-friendly adventures? As an American family who moved to the Netherlands in 2023, we’ve loved exploring the country’s hidden gems and discovering what makes each town special. In this post, I’ll share 10 beautiful towns in the Netherlands that are great to visit with kids.
Utrecht
While Utrecht is technically a city rather than a town, it’s a destination that shouldn’t be missed when exploring the Netherlands. Known for its stunning canals, some of the most beautiful in the country, in my opinion.
This charming city is just a short train ride from Amsterdam, making it easy to get to. Utrecht was also the first place we visited in the Netherlands, thanks to our friends who moved here in 2021!
Utrecht
Top Things To Do In Utrecht:
Grab snacks or a drink by the dramatic canals. It is more about the vibe than the actual food at these restaurants, so don’t expect world class dining!
Visit Kasteel de Haar, the largest and most luxurious castle in the Netherlands - my kids loved seeing the knights’ armour.
Things Specifically For Kids In Utrecht:
Explore the Railway Museum (Spoorwegmuseum), an interactive train museum
Play at the Miffy Museum, dedicated to the beloved Dutch children’s character
Let the kids run wild at Griftpark, home to one of the best playgrounds in Utrecht
Kinderdijk
When people think of traditional Dutch windmills, they often visit Zaanse Schans—but Kinderdijk offers a less touristy and more authentic experience. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to 19 beautifully preserved windmills set along scenic canals. It’s a fantastic place to experience the Netherlands’ iconic landscape while learning about the country’s centuries-old water management system.
